About Me
Name: Megan Fleming
Age: 24
Home Town: Mount Evelyn, Victoria
Hobbies: Art, drawing, designing, creating, photography, watching documentaries, reading, baking, camping, playing netball, learning Italian and traveling.
Interests: European history, Australian history, art history.
Born and raised in the east of Melbourne, I come from a large but close family and am the youngest of 5 children. A thirst for knowledge that I share with my father prompted me to become a teacher as I believe it is a career where I can share my passions and interests as well as continue to learn and to discover new things. Originally pursuing a career in international relations, I began studying Arts majoring in Japanese Language. However, I soon decided to draw on my strong interests in art and the humanities as well as my compassion for others, and to become a secondary school teacher was the most obvious career path for me.
I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to visit many European cities with my partner whose family resides in Italy. Seeing many of the Italian renaissance paintings that I had studied and seen only in books has been a true highlight! I believe that travel can be a great contribution to a persons education and was lucky enough to be an exchange student in Japan when I myself was a secondary school student.
I am also an enthusiastic volunteer and am regularly a member for the Yarra Ranges Relay for Life committee. In 2012 I took on the responsibility of chairing the committee, managing a up to 15 volunteers to ensure a cooperative team and ultimately, a successful event. I am very proud of the money and awareness I help to raise for cancer research, support and advocacy and enjoy the connection with my community that I gain through this experience from year to year.
More recently, I have become a volunteer for the YMCA Youth Services, as a leader on the Connect camping program. The program is a week long school holiday camp for young people aged 8-16 who are considered vulnerable, disadvantaged or at risk and are generally living in care or supported accommodation. Whilst challenging, I find being a leader on Connect incredibly rewarding. It has taught me strategies to deal with high pressure situations, and to engage students who are otherwise disinterested. The camp makes a clear difference in the lives of the young campers, and the experience has given me a strong interest in the welfare of my students.
