Using the Spiral Curriculum and Concept Formation Model
The below exert from the lesson plan I developed for a Year 8 history class illustrates how I structure lessons for concept development in The Humanities, using The 'Spiral Curriculum and Concept Formation' model. Introducing the topic at a simple level and allowing students to draw on their own previous knowledge however basic this may be, forms a strong basis for concept attainment. This strategy was successful as it built on the student's 'real world' knowledge and allows for deeper connections with the concept.

The Year 9 unit on tectonic movements and earthquakes (sample of lesson shown above) illustrates effective teaching by direct instruction. The lesson is designed to use students' ideas, effective questioning, probing, and modelling enthusiasm, which are key to the initial stages of valuable concept development.
